Is it ok to paint the coop and run?Updated 2 months ago

Absolutely!

All of our coops come pre-stained with two coats of our Chicken Coop Company stain.

However, we do recommend applying an additional coat of stain or paint once your coop is assembled. This helps seal any screw holes, seams, and areas exposed during assembly, and gives the wood an extra layer of protection.

You’re welcome to paint your coop, or if you like the existing stain color, you can simply re-stain it over time.

We offer a discounted stain option here in our exact color, which can be picked up directly at your local Sherwin-Williams.

Many families choose to paint their coop to match their home, barn, or personal style - and we love seeing the creativity.

You can use any high-quality exterior paint. Heavy-duty exterior paints are especially great, as one or two coats will help protect and strengthen the wood against the elements.

A few quick tips:

  • Make sure the surface is completely dry before painting or staining.

  • Allow the finish to fully cure and dry before introducing your flock.

  • Painting the inside is optional - it isn’t required for protection right away. Many customers focus on the exterior first and refresh the inside later if desired.

Just like any outdoor structure, your coop will benefit from periodic maintenance. As the finish begins to look worn from sun, rain, or snow, it’s wise to apply a fresh coat of stain or paint to keep the wood protected.

A little upkeep goes a long way in keeping your coop looking great - and keeping your flock comfortable for years to come.
