What type of wood do you use for your coops and runs?Updated a month ago

Our coops are built from Fir wood - the same type of wood commonly used in home construction.

We’ve found Fir to be a great alternative to cedar. While cedar is popular, it tends to split more easily. Fir offers excellent durability, natural resiliency to the elements, and it’s lighter in weight - which makes assembly easier without sacrificing strength.

Like any outdoor wooden structure (whether it’s a porch, fence, or shed) your coop will benefit from an added layer of protection.

All of our coops come pre-stained, but we recommend applying an additional coat of stain or exterior paint once your coop is assembled. This helps seal seams, screw holes, and exposed areas, giving the wood longer-lasting protection.

We offer a color-matching stain on our website that can be picked up at your local Sherwin-Williams. It’s an exact match to our original finish, and you’ll receive 10% off the retail price.

A little maintenance over time goes a long way in keeping your coop sturdy, protected, and looking great for years to come.
